Susan Wilson, LPC
At Counseling Connections, Inc, I provide compassionate, trauma-informed counseling that recognizes the deep connection between emotional experiences, the nervous system, and the body. As a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia with more than 25 years of clinical experience, I have dedicated my work to helping individuals understand and heal the effects of trauma across the lifespan.
Trauma can result from a single overwhelming event or from repeated experiences that occur over time, including childhood experiences, relationship wounds, chronic stress, loss, neglect, abuse, medical trauma, or other situations in which a person felt emotionally unsafe, unsupported, powerless, or alone. Even after the experience has ended, the body and nervous system may continue to respond as though the danger is still present. These reactions are often misunderstood and may appear as anxiety, depression, panic symptoms, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, relationship difficulties, chronic stress responses, or patterns of coping that once served as protection and survival.
My approach to therapy helps clients understand how trauma is stored in the body and how the nervous system responds automatically to perceived threats or reminders of past experiences. When triggered, the body may recreate sensations, emotions, and survival responses connected to the original trauma. Therapy provides a safe and supportive environment to explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion rather than shame or fear.
I work from a holistic, body-centered perspective that integrates Polyvagal Theory, Somatic Therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), mindfulness-based approaches, and traditional talk therapy. This integrative approach supports clients in developing greater nervous system regulation, emotional awareness, self-compassion, and a renewed sense of safety within themselves and in relationships with others.
My goal is to help clients move beyond survival patterns and toward healing, resilience, connection, and emotional balance. Together, we work to build an increased understanding of the body's responses, strengthen healthy coping skills, process unresolved experiences, and create space for lasting emotional and physical well-being.
I believe therapy is not simply about reducing symptoms, but about helping individuals reconnect with themselves in a deeper and more meaningful way-learning to feel grounded, present, and at peace within their own bodies and lives.
